Most locks open without damage — A pick, a bypass or a card. You keep the lock and the keys you already have
Drilling destroys the lock — So it is the last answer, not the first — and it means buying a replacement on top of the callout
When drilling is right — A seized mechanism, a snapped key deep in the barrel, or a lock already broken by someone forcing it

A child or an animal shut in a car — Call the emergency services, not a locksmith. They will be faster and they will not charge you
Wait somewhere lit — A neighbour, a shop, the car. We'll ring when we're five minutes away rather than have you stand there
Have ID and proof of address ready — We will ask. A locksmith who opens a door for anyone who called is the one to worry about
