If it's an emergency, ring before you drive
Out of hours we may not be the right place for your animal, and the two minutes it takes to ring can save you an hour at the wrong door. The line below is answered at any time by somebody who can tell you where to go.
Have their name and roughly what has happened. If you are already on your way to another emergency vet, that is the right decision — keep going.
Small animal practice

You'll always be given a choice.

Two things frighten people about a vet: the bill, and being hurried into a decision. So our standard prices are printed on this page, and you will always be offered more than one option — with the cost of each — before anything is agreed.

Before any treatment — The options, the cost of each, and what happens if you do nothing
Before any test — Why we're doing it, and what we'd do differently depending on the answer
Before any referral — What it costs, what the alternative is, and whether waiting is safe
When money is the problem — Say so. It changes what we recommend, and it is never held against you
What we can't promise — A recovery. We can promise you'll know what we know, as soon as we know it
What things cost
A consultation — $52, and it is fifteen minutes with a vet rather than five
Out of hours — $140 on top, because somebody is being called out of bed for it
A vaccination course — $78 for a puppy or kitten, including the health check
Neutering — From $190 by size and species, quoted exactly before the day
Dental work — Quoted after we've looked, never before. We'll show you the photographs
A repeat prescription — $18 for the paperwork — and you may buy the medicine wherever you like
These are our standard prices, on this page for the same reason a menu is on a wall. Anything complicated gets a written estimate before it starts, and we ring you if that estimate is going to change.

What counts as an emergency

Ring immediately

Difficulty breathing, collapse, a seizure that doesn't stop, a hard swollen belly, straining to pass urine, or anything hit by a car.

Ring today

Not eating for over a day, repeated vomiting, sudden lameness, an eye held closed or gone cloudy, or a wound you can see into.

Ring, but don't panic

Off-colour, one episode of sickness, itching, or a limp that's improving. We would still far rather hear about it than not.

If they've eaten something

Chocolate, grapes, raisins, ibuprofen, antifreeze, xylitol. Ring straight away and bring the packet — waiting to see is the mistake.

When the time comes
You can be there. You can come at the end of a day when the waiting room is empty, or we can come to the house. You will not be rushed, and you will not be asked to decide on the same day unless waiting would be unkind to them.
You can be with them — In the room, holding them, for all of it if that's what you want
A quiet appointment — First or last of the day, and you don't have to walk back through reception
At home — Possible, and much easier to arrange in advance than on the day
Afterwards — We talk you through the choices once, and you can take time over them
What we'll tell you honestly — Whether we think it's time. Asking us that question is allowed
If you're reading this in advance, that is a sensible thing to be doing rather than a morbid one.

Parking is behind the building and there is a separate entrance for cats, which keeps the waiting room a great deal calmer for everybody in it.
They gave me three options and the price of each, including doing nothing at all. Nobody had ever done that before.

The vet rang me herself at nine at night to say he had eaten something. She didn't have to do that.

It takes a minute and costs nothing. It means that on the day something happens we already have the history — which is the difference between a fast decision and a slow one.
