Hire is the one trade where the number you booked and the number at the counter are famously different. Every extra we charge is printed further down this page, along with the hold that goes on your card and the excess you would actually pay.

What catches people out

The card hold — Not a payment, but it does leave your balance
Driver under 25 — A surcharge, and some classes are off limits
Out-of-hours pickup — Possible, chargeable, and needs a day's notice
One-way drops — Priced per route rather than a flat fee

Check dates

Weekend rate runs Friday afternoon to Monday morning and is charged as two days. Longer than four weeks becomes a lease agreement, which is cheaper again — ask rather than book seven hires in a row.

Every extra we charge, printed here

Additional driver — $8 a day, and they need to be at the counter with their own licence
Driver aged 21–24 — $15 a day. Under 21 we cannot insure at all, whatever another firm told you
Out-of-hours collection or return — $25, arranged the day before
Delivery or collection — $1.20 a mile each way, inside 30 miles
Child seat — $6 a day, fitted by you — we are not allowed to fit it for you
Extra mileage — $0.22 a mile over the daily allowance, charged only on what you actually use
Returned unwashed inside — $45. Sand, mud and dog hair, not a bit of dust on the dash
Smoking — $150. It is the only charge here we would rather never issue
Late return — 29 minutes free, then the day rate. Ring us — a phone call has always been cheaper than the charge

That is the list. There is no admin fee, no counter service charge and no fuel surcharge, and if something is not on this list you will not be billed for it.

The hold on your card, and the excess

The hold — $250 on a car, $500 on a van. It is ringfenced, not taken, and released when the car comes back
When it clears — Instantly from our side, then five to ten working days at your bank. That wait is the bank's, and nobody at a counter can shorten it
The excess — $900. That is the most you would pay towards damage, however the repair is priced
Reducing it with us — $14 a day takes it to zero. Convenient, and honestly the expensive way to do it
Reducing it elsewhere — Standalone excess insurance is usually far cheaper for a week. You pay us first and claim it back — that is the trade-off, and we would rather you knew
The card must be the driver's — In the main driver's own name, with their name printed on it. This is the single most common reason a hire falls apart at the counter

Bring these, and know these

Your licence

Photocard plus whatever check code or paper counterpart your licensing authority issues. Bring it, even for a day.

Proof of address

Something dated in the last three months. A phone bill on a screen is fine.

A card in your name

For the hold. Not a friend's, not a company card with someone else's name on it.

Full to full

It leaves full and comes back full. Keep the receipt from the last fill and there is nothing to discuss.

Tell us about ferries

Abroad, islands and ferries are all possible with notice — and void the insurance without it.

Dogs are fine

In the boot, with a cover. The valet charge is for what gets left behind, not for the dog.
