Upholstery is eight to fourteen weeks — Made to order, in a queue, and the queue is real. Anyone quoting three weeks is selling from stock — a different and perfectly good thing, but say which one you're buying
"In stock" means in stock somewhere — Ask which warehouse, and whether it's in the fabric you chose. The same sofa in the shop's own fabric ships in days and in yours it doesn't
Lead times stretch in autumn — Everybody wants it by Christmas, including you. Ordering in July for December costs exactly the same and arrives
Delivery is a second queue — Made in ten weeks, delivered in fourteen. That gap is a lorry, not a workshop, and it is nobody's fault but it is still four weeks
Get the date in writing or it isn't a date — "Around March" is a hope. A written week is a commitment, and most makers will give you one if you ask at the order
Order the slow thing first — Sofa, then table, then everything else. People order in the sequence they care about instead, and then wait on the one they cared about least

Discontinued pieces stay in the pictures — With a line saying so. Quietly removing them would make these rooms look more available than they are, which is the exact trick this page exists not to do
And the nearest thing that isn't gone — Named, with what's different about it. It is nearly always the arm or the depth, and it is nearly always the depth that matters
Fabric goes long before a frame does — A frame lasts a decade in a range; a fabric lasts two seasons. Most of what people call discontinued is a colour, and the frame is still there
Ask about ex-display and seconds — Every shop has them and almost none advertise them. End of season is when to ask, and a mark you can't find is worth a third off
Second-hand isn't a downgrade here — Half of what's in these rooms would be better bought used, and the two discontinued pieces above can only be bought that way
Where nothing replaces it, we say so — Rather than pointing you at something that isn't as good and hoping. It's a short list and it's an honest one

Nothing on this page takes your money — Every link goes to the maker, or to the shop that actually holds the stock. You buy at their price, on their terms, and the receipt has their name on it
Which matters most on the day it goes wrong — A damaged delivery is an argument with whoever sold it to you. Keeping that to one company instead of two is worth more than any discount we could have arranged
We're not a shop and we hold no stock — So we can't be cheaper and we can't be quicker. What we can be is right about what fits, which is the only thing we're offering
No affiliate links, on any of it — Not one. If that ever changes, the link itself will say so — on the link, not in small print at the bottom where nobody reads it
We don't take a fee from a maker to be included — Which is why some obvious names aren't here and some very small ones are
The only thing we charge for — An hour of help choosing, at the bottom of this page, and it's optional. Everything above it is free and stays free

The branches aren't for sale — Nor is the bowl of lemons, nor the stack of books, nor the light coming through the window at four o'clock in September
Rugs are always photographed one size up — It's the commonest trick in the business and it isn't even deliberate any more. Measure the rug in the picture against the sofa and you'll see it
The room is emptier than a room — No cables, no radiator, no bin, no post. Yours will have all four and it will still be fine — it just won't look like this
Colour on a screen is a guess — Order the swatch. Every maker sends them, most send them free, and it is the single cheapest mistake to avoid
Scale is the lie a photograph tells best — A wide lens makes a small room generous and a big sofa modest. This is why the dimensions are in the list rather than left to your eye
Nothing here was borrowed for the day — If a piece in a photograph isn't in the list, it's ours and it isn't for sale. That's the whole exception and there are three of them

The doorway, the turn, then the stairs — In that order. The room is almost never the problem — the turn at the top of the stairs is, and it is the one nobody checks
Ask for the PACKAGED dimensions — Not the finished ones. A sofa arrives in a box that's bigger than the sofa, and the box is what has to get through the door
Tape the footprint on the floor — Newspaper and masking tape. Live with it for two days and you'll know — this catches more mistakes than any drawing does
Depth is the number people get wrong — A 96cm sofa against a 90cm one is six centimetres of walkway, and in a small room that's the difference between a room and a corridor
Check the diagonal, not just the width — Almost everything comes in tipped on its side. The diagonal of the box against the diagonal of the doorway is the real test
Ceiling height decides more than floor area — Low ceilings want low furniture. It's the reason a piece that looked wrong in the shop is right in your house, and the reverse
