Know what it doesn't cover. Before you need it.
We place cover for trades, shops and small firms. Every policy on earth has exclusions — ours are printed further down this page, in the order people usually find them out.
Three levels, and what each one is for
Essentials
- Public liability
- Employers' liability if you have staff
- Tools cover to a set limit
- The cover most contracts ask for
Standard
- Everything in Essentials
- Higher tools and stock limits
- Business interruption
- Legal expenses included, not bolted on
Full
- Everything in Standard
- Professional indemnity
- Contract works
- Cover for named subcontractors
Work you did badly — Liability covers the accident, not re-doing the job that failed
Tools left in a van overnight — Excluded on most policies unless the van is alarmed and you asked for it
Anything you didn't declare — An undeclared trade, claim or conviction can void the whole policy
Fines, and most cyber losses — Separate covers — and some fines cannot be insured at all
What happens when you claim
Call us, not the insurer
One number, in office hours or out of them. We would far rather hear about it on the day than a fortnight later.
We notify and open the file
Same day wherever we can. You get the claim number and the name of the person handling it, not a portal reference.
The adjuster visits
We tell you what they'll ask, what to photograph and what not to throw away. Keep the damaged thing, whatever it is.
The insurer decides
That decision is theirs, not ours. If it comes back wrong we say so in writing and take it up — and we tell you plainly if we think they're right.
Employers' liability — Required by law the moment you have staff, casual included
Tools and stock — Named, valued, and out of the van overnight
Professional indemnity — If it's your advice or your drawing that goes wrong
Business interruption — The one that pays the wages while you're shut
Legal expenses as an add-on — Often already sitting inside the liability policy you have
Key person cover on a sole trader — There is no key person to replace except you
Every optional extra at once — Each is a small premium and a big excess
A limit far above your contracts — Match the limit to what your contracts actually demand

“They found we were paying for two liability policies through two different brokers, and cancelled one of them. That conversation cost them money.”

Shopfitting, six staff
“The claim took eleven weeks and I knew where it was every single week. I never once had to explain the story twice.”
